Who Am I?

I am a children’s book writer, a mother of two daughters and a son, and a trained birth doula. I live in Vermont in a small town with the most amazing bakery/community center/music and arts venue, and when I am not there writing (and eating!), I am at home with my kids or running on the trail by the river near my house.

Tamara Ellis Smith, children's book writerI graduated in 2007 from Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults, and have written over half a dozen picture books and two middle grade novels—all yet to be published!

My middle grade novel MARBLE BOYS won an Honorable Mention in the 2008 PEN New England Discovery Awards and was runner up for the 2008 SCBWI Works-In-Progress grant. I am represented by the incredible Erin Murphy of Erin Murphy Literary Agency.

Art imitates life. We experience something and then we want to write about it.  But sometimes it happens in reverse, and life imitates art. In my essay in Hunger Mountain Literary Journal, I explore living through Tropical Storm Irene, and how it changed both me and my middle grade manuscript, MARBLE BOYS, which is, in part, about Hurricane Katrina. An excerpt from MARBLE BOYS is in Hunger Mountain as well.
