Taking a quick break from all things NCTE to let you know @nancyillustrator and I are on @cynthialeitichsmith’s amazing blog CYNSATIONS where you can see the spaces we drew and wrote GRIEF IS AN ELEPHANT—and lots of other things! (And check out my writing partners Stellaluna and Pax who are—yes!—from the books 🦇🦊) Thank you, Cyn and @gayleen_rabakukk!

Amazing experience at the Original Art Exhibit @soi128 💜 Society of Illustrators’ founding belief: to give children’s book illustrators the respect and attention they deserve as fine artists, and to offer them our gratitude for using their talents to make storytelling a magical experience 💜 THIS IS TRUE 💜 I am humbled by @nancyillustrator’s talent 💜 I also had the absolute pleasure of meeting children’s book authors @samanthabergerauthor and @katyehbooks at the gallery 💜 I feel deeply lucky to be a part of this world

A few moments from my book launch party for GRIEF IS AN ELEPHANT. Cookies by @sweetvttreats, the REMEMBER AND banner project, the firefly stuffie art project (their bums light up!), my sister @calliedepina and her family made my day by being there, and this last photo, taken by the brilliant @alicepollvogt, during my talk—doesn’t it look like my dad and I are having a conversation? I was trying to 💜
Thank you to @richmondcommunitykitchen and @heyjunevt for making the event exactly what I hoped for.

Megan Devine's pull-back-the-curtain, empathetic, and wise words about grief gave me ground when I was falling. Megan's beliefs in community and conversation and truth are part of the inspiration for GRIEF IS AN ELEPHANT: grief as a series of characters who are part of the conversation. IT'S OK THAT YOU'RE NOT OK is a brilliant book. Thank you Megan and @refugeingrief
